Summary
Referring to a personnel matter involving a Captain Bates; commenting on the recent defection of [Pierre-Cuillier] Perron from Scindia's army saying "The defection of Perron the day after Ally Ghur was taken in the gallant manner it was, was worth the taking of [illegible], for a French man quitting Scindia when we were at war with France will shew him he can have no dependence upon European Officers of any country in future - for who can he now trust - French men would not stay and he can expect none will after that, and to remove Europeans from the Service of the Country proves(?) they would soon lose all our Science and Tactics - and sink into their original ignorance - it is the greatest thing that has happened in my mind since the commencement of Hostilities;" commenting on the battle at Delhi and suggesting that it is unlikely to be a threat from Holkar as "indeed you have enough on your hands without his acting against you;" discussing various personnel issues including the assignment of an assistant surgeon.
