Summary
Discussing the impact on his Regiment and on him of a possible peace agreement; saying "We hear the Preliminarys of Peace are Signed, & if it is true, that we are to Evacuate Egypt, & the Cape, some of the Plans I lately Proposed, will of course, fall to the Ground;" asking for his assistance is getting the salary he has applied for and saying "...it is now doubly necessary, as in Tuscany the French will now be the Favoured Nation, & if the British Consul has not the means given him, of Living in a Style of respectability, his application to the Government of the Country, will never be so much attended to - You know how much every thing is influenced by appearances & more particularly in Italy. As matters stand, indeed 4 5ths of my Expenses must be drawn from my own funds...The Gentlemen who have Preceded me in this office have Lived by being merch'ts & Speculators, w'h [illegible] is Strictly forbidden."
