Summary
Congratulating him on being at home with his family and away from the political strife; expressing his gratitude for the blessings they have in England; commenting, at length, on the "state of wretchedness" in Europe; telling him that General Brenier "continues to mend in Health;" commenting on his friendship with Brenier and the excellent qualities in him that would make him a good candidate for a prisoner exchange; proposing a prisoner exchange involving General Brenier and explaining how Brenier's friendship with him will make him a good ambassador for peace when he returns to France; relating his own personal and strong relationships with French Ministers and officials; concluding that while he hopes he is "doing That which I ought to do - I do not fail in doing that which may tend to the general good."
