Apologizing for not answering Markson's last letter for six years; describing his mental state after the publication of The Recognitions; commenting on Markson's recent work; criticizing the writing of other contemporary authors: "have you seen the writing in such things as [Leon Uris's] Exodus and [Robert Traver's] Anatomy of a Murder? Can one ever cease to be appalled at how little is asked?"; mentioning that his book may be republished by Meridian; telling him about his efforts to write a play and complaining about Broadway directors and publishers; noting that he intends to read a book by Malcolm Lowry after hearing what Lowry said about The Recognitions.
