Notes
In keeping with the conventions used in the scholarly editions of Burney's correspondence, she is referred to in these records as FB before her marriage and FBA afterwards. Her husband, Alexandre d'Arblay, is referred to as M.d'A.
The custom of naming children after their parents and the frequency of marriages within close familial and social circles created names that can be confusing: for instance, Fanny Burney's sister Esther is referred to in these records as "Esther Burney Burney" because she married her cousin Charles Rousseau Burney. Likewise, her brother James's family contains two Sarahs: his wife Sarah, whose maiden name was Payne and who is therefore referred to in these records as "Sarah Payne Burney," and his daughter Sarah, who married her cousin John Payne and is here referred to as "Sarah Burney Payne."
Additional information about the provenance of the collection is available in the Collection File.
