Summary
Adding a personal note on the verso of the questionnaire suggesting a time they might meet and giving a return address in Syracuse, NY; replying to questions on his current work; saying he is working on a "narrative poem called "The Permitted Wife" and thinking that his next project might be a "long story, or short novel, about a smalltown Kansas woman, white, Episcopalian, respectable, born in the late 19th century, and the effect on her of the succession of upheavals which the 20th century works on her life;" replying to the question about whether he has a long-range plan for himself saying "I intend to tell stories, whether in verse or in prose, which study people, themselves not necessarily very extraordinary, in the process of discovering that the scheme of values by which they have been living or in which they were raised is inadequate to the world they find themselves in. Whatever the course of action they take as a result of this discovery and of their circumstances -- nihilistic destruction, madness, despair, futility, revolution, enlargement of soul -- my interest is in their humanity rather than in the social, religious, political causes of their troubles."
