Summary
Replying to the question of which three writers will dominate the 70s "William Gass, John Barth, Saul Bellow; to the writer whose prose style you most admire, William Gass; the writer to whose work you feel the deepest emotional response and whose execution of character is strongest, he names Saul Bellow; to the questions of his favorite novel and short story of the past five years he names "Herzog" and "Menelaiaid." [John Barth, "Lost in the Fun House"]; replying to a 2nd questionnaire that relates to his current work; saying he is almost finished with "The Dick Gibson Show" and he would like to work on "a second collection of short stories;" answering the question about his long-range plan for himself, saying "1. After the collection I want to do a novel about all the poets and writers in the United States. (This book would have no central character). At a writers' conference in Iowa a couple of years back I was struck by how everybody seemed to know everybody else, as gypsies probably know all other gypsies. It would be a book about parties. 2. A book more realistic than any I've done, about the death of a young father. 3. Before doing either of these novels I would like to do one or two film scripts -- carte blanche or no deal. Then, when the kids are grown up, I'd like to run for Mayor of Cincinnati."
