Summary
Reporting that he arrived in Los Angeles at 4:30 this afternoon; reflecting on what he has seen on his trip so far; noting that "there was nothing unusual about Chicago except that the lake-front is a greater display of wealth than anything I know of in New York, and that the Polish and Italian neighborhoods [are] a greater show of poverty than anything I've ever seen"; calling the "wheat states ... beautiful and green" and "the desert ... an heroic stretch of infertility"; adding that "California, after you get over the mountains, is the opposite of the desert. Everything green like crazy, particularly flowers."
