Wishing he could be there to help with the new apartment; apologizing because he forgot her birthday; telling her he is trying to finish a story so she "can buy a birthday present with that"; remarking that he may wire her for ten dollars for his trip; commenting on his chances of being made a corporal; discussing the I.Q. test and noting that he "do[es]n't see how [he] ever flunked it the first time"; writing, "I still don't know mathematics in spite of all the literature you sent me"; concluding, "I'll stay with Special Service until we go up to Dix and see what the score is there, and then if we continue the training schedule I'll go back into the field and try and distinguish myself there."
