Writing, "we came off the night problem with flying colors and Durham wasn't in this morning"; reporting that "of ... four officers candidates, two of them flunked the interview"; noting, "In every way ... the army picks the men it needs at the moment and the hell with the rest of them"; remarking that they "are now restricted to Spartanburg on ... week-ends [which] may mean that [they are] on call for shipment"; adding that "the men who have had all their teeth pulled out ... have not been given fake teeth yet," and they "won't move until they have been given their plates"; thanking her for the cookies; asking her to send a $10 money order; remarking that "one good thing about the army is this strange mixture of types"; suggesting that she have lunch with Helen.
