Summary
Concerning his desire for his promotion to Brevet Lt. Colonel and expressing his hope that he will have his letter of recommendation for it; saying that he is not asking for a staff position although he knows officers much younger who have attained those positions; saying "...all that I ask is that rank (as Lieut. Colonel) to which I am entitled, upon the fairest principles of Equity, and I know that your recommendation will procure the perfect gratification of my wishes. I am now Serving by your advice, under Field Officers much younger in that rank than myself, - but I am Content to Serve and Exert myself in His Majesty's Service in the hope of obtaining my proper rank, and I rely on your goodness in Assisting me on this occasion."
