Summary
Describing his trip south on a troop train; noting that when he got up in the morning, he was "in the deep South ... the Carson McCullers, Eudora Welty country"; observing that "this is not at all like [Fort] Dix. After a day here it seems a little like the movie of West Point"; telling her that they will be there "from eight to thirteen weeks, taking an intensive course in infantry"; suggesting that she might be able to come down to visit him when she gets Saturdays off; wondering if a check has arrived; telling her he misses her terribly, "but this is war and I don't suppose there will be much of the old life for anyone until the war is over."
