Giving details of his journey from London to Edinburgh; reporting that it "required some philosophy to bear the change from England to Scotland"; complaining about his job: "to speak well when I despise both the cause & the Judges is difficult"; noting that if his father "persists in retaining the allowance or establishment which he has hitherto paid [him, he will] be somewhat embarrassed"; wishing he could get "an independency from the King" while his father lives.
