Summary
Expressing concern that Temple did not receive his last letter "containing a full account of Mr. [David] Hume's opinion as to the study of modern History"; discussing the historians Hume recommended including [Paul François] Velly, [Guido] Bentivoglio, [Niccolò] Machiavelli, Father Paul [Pietro Sarpi], and [Francesco] Guicciardini; encouraging him to accept his lot in life and not to attempt to change his profession; hoping Temple will visit soon.
