Summary
Writing that Temple's last letter "did [him] much good"; observing that people are "fond of [his] conversation" when he is "chearfull & lively," but "nobody but a sincere friend can listen to [his] complaints when opprest with Melancholy"; discussing their friendship and observing that it will stand the test of time; sending him his "Journal of last Autumn," instructing him to show it to no one, and asking him to return it when he has finished with it; remarking that he has "finished [David] Hume's history."
