Part of a collection of letters from Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent, to Colonel Frederick Augustus Wetherall. Items in the collection are described in separate records; see MA 2909 for details.
Possibly signed "R. Manners," but there is no indication that Robert Manners was at Amorbach. The writer appears to be someone who was part of the Duke of Kent's inner circle.
Summary
Sending another extract from a letter written by the Duchess of Gloucester to the Duke of Kent; writing, "should the Committee of The Duke's friends wish him to come over, & be willing to make the necessary advances for the Purpose, it is probable that His Royal Highness will still be disposed to undertake the Journey"; telling him that the Duke of Kent gives him "Carte Blanche" to show Sir Hume "any part of the correspondence" related to whether he should return to England; informing him that the Duchess of Kent is "going on as well as possible." The letter includes excerpts from the Duchess of Gloucester's letter to the Duke of Kent dated Dec. 23, 1818, in which she writes that the Duchess of Clarence [Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV] is too unwell to return to England, reiterates that she doesn't think the Prince Regent [George IV] can help finance his journey, assures him that she will receive him warmly if he returns to England, and says that she "wait[s] for a safe opportunity to send [him] some little things for the Baby" [Queen Victoria] but first wants to be sure of his plans.
