Part of a large collection of autograph manuscripts and letters of John Greenleaf Whittier. Items in the collection are described in individual records; see MA 1304 for details.
Some pages written on sheets of paper that also contain letters, including a letter from Celia Thaxter dated "Newtonville, May 4th," a letter from Samuel Stern dated "Syracuse, April 21, '74," and a fragment of a letter from an unidentified writer on letterhead stationery of The Independent [Theodore Tilton's publication] dated "May 2, 1874." The date of the manuscript is based on these dated letters.
The Morgan Library also holds an autograph fair copy of this poem, cataloged separately as MA 1304.46.
This manuscript includes multiple drafts of the poem.
