Describing how she waited anxiously to hear that he had arrived safely in Scotland; commenting on plans to stay at Annan or Tynemouth and observing that she needs to visit her mother "after the positive hopes [she has] given her"; mentioning a visit from [Godefroy] Cavaignac; adding that John Sterling "is said to be coming up on Wednesday"; noting that [Giuseppe] Mazzini brought over "a long and eloquent article" about Thomas Carlyle for her approval; giving details of Mazzini's review; informing him that a packet has come from [James] Fraser's but she is "too honest to lay hands on it"; remarking that she had a terrible headache the day after he left and suggesting that it may have been caused by old buttermilk.
