Summary
Reporting that his life in Rome is very quiet; discussing his difficulties in finding patients; commenting on social differences between the English and the Italians; noting that he has made some money in fees, at least enough to cover his living expenses for the rest of his time in Rome; writing that he is glad Carlyle's history of the French Revolution is completed; asking him to send some proofs of the history; wishing Thomas Carlyle "could engage with [John Stuart] Mill to write a series of articles on the most remarkable characters of the Revolution"; reminding him that "there is good in standing still from time to time & looking about you calmly, especially in these days of movement and revolution"; adding that he is anxious to hear "what determination Alick [their brother] has come to" about going to America; saying that he is sorry to hear Jane [Carlyle] suffers so much from headaches.
