Reporting that he had a good journey from "Manchester and its smoky environs" to London; adding that he "found every thing well" at Cheyne Row; giving details of Lady Clare's plan to travel to Italy for the winter; mentioning that he and Tom "intend making two or three short excursions among the suburbs of London while Tom is taking his recreation"; noting that he "found out Mrs. [Edward] Irving's house" and "she seems in a prosperous way, supported ... by those who adhered to her husband"; commenting on shared acquaintances in London; hoping that she will do some sightseeing in Manchester and warning her against "a state of stagnation and nervousness."
