Summary
Commenting on the death of their friend, Edward Irving; giving details of his stay in Rome; reporting that he did ask Lady Clare for permission to practice in Rome, and that his "proposal seems only to have had the effect of simplifying [their] relation to each other and so making if more agreeable to all parties"; describing his quarrels with Miss Hoare, an Irish girl also with Lady Clare; telling him that he has read his Sartor Resartus "again and marked all the best passages which [he] turn[s] to almost daily and find[s] more and more significant"; noting that he thinks Thomas is "too anxious about pecuniary matters"; adding that he thinks he will be able to "renew [his] engagement with Lady Clare on perhaps better terms" or find something else similar.
