Mentioning the marriage of Samuel Aitken and Jean Grier; noting that he promised their mother to write to Thomas "forthwith" to let him know of their "continued welfare"; observing that the "Scotsbrig people" are "very much in their usual way"; telling him that it looks like their sister Jean will marry "the painter" [James Aitken]; explaining that the family is "anything but satisfied with the prospect" of this marriage; reporting on the state of his own farm; asking him to tell Jane [Carlyle] that "her little namesake ... lives to repeat almost every word she hears."
