Reporting that he is "well & extremely busy"; thanking him for his letter; commenting on his medical studies in London; mentioning his efforts to publish in Fraser's Magazine; noting that he received "a proof of a long criticism which [he] scribbled some time ago on Sir W[alter] Scott's new book on Demonology & Witchcraft"; telling him that he has "not closed with [John Gibson] Lockhart about the projected Hist[ory]"; remarking that "[James?] Fraser is best because he troubles you with no alterations, but his pay is small"; saying that he is "sorry for [Francis] Jeffrey & his criticisms; they go against the grain even with himself"; adding that he saw C[harles] Buller and he seemed "unwell."
