Summary
Announcing that he has "arrived at Rotterdam in safety"; describing the passage as "somewhat stormy and also tedious" and giving a detailed account of the journey; complaining that the "Queen of Wurtemburg [Queen Charlotte, Consort of Frederick I, King of Württemberg] on her way from England has been pleased to engage the whole vessel [the steam-boat to Cologne] to carry herself & attendants" so he must wait a week or find another conveyance; reporting that he plans to go to the Hague or Leyden, "from which place ... there are conveyances by water to Cologne"; telling him that he "expect[s] to be in Munich in about a fortnight"; hoping that Jane [Carlyle] "has recovered from her sickness"; mentioning that he is going with a Mr. Steven to see "the church and the Statue of [Desiderius] Erasmus" in Rotterdam.
