Summary
Expressing his hope that he will accept the position offered to him; saying "For our own sakes, I am certainly most anxious that we should have the great good fortune to obtain your powerful support; but I am sure you will allow me to add that I am exceedingly anxious for it on your account likewise. I am aware that you may whenever it may suit you take a prominent part in our public affairs, but I am very sure that you never can be engaged with better men, or with better friends to you, than those are who are now in power, & if you sh'd even be disposed to accept the offer made to you, there is no one of your wishes that would afterwards be refused. I must conclude with saying that the King expects you, & that the Country is loudly calling for you. It may be supposed that we are at present deficient in strength. If you were to witness the enthusiasm & the determination to do well, you would not be of that opinion; * should we be so fortunate as to possess you, I am confident that we should have a stronger Administration than the Country has ever seen since the loss of Pitt."
