Reflecting "on the delicacy and difficulty of my Situation. Until Sunday night the formidable Event of your resignation had never appeared to me so probable, or at least never appeared so near, as to induce me to consider its consequences with much attention. If you should resign, you are already apprised of my determination not to enter the Cabinet. The principle on which that determination is founded, will operate with greater strength to preclude the possibility of my continuance in Spain, & of my holding any employment under the Government which may be formed with your aid.
