Summary
Explaining that his letter is late because he was sick and because he has been grieving the death of his friend, l'Abbé [Claude] Sallier; recounting that he has had a severe cold from which he has not yet recovered; adding that he has made two public "reponses" to M. [Charles-Marie] de la Condamine and to M. [Claude-Henri] Watelet, both of whom have recently been accepted into the Académie française; alerting him that he has sent a copy of Condamine's speech and his response to M. [Jacques de] Varenne, who will give it to M. de Ruffey; explaining that the speech made by M. Watelet has not yet been printed but that he will send it as well; adding that, "vous verrez que je ne m'en suis tiré qu'a force d'être court"; recounting that there are still two vacant places, one of which is likely to be filled by M. [Jean-Baptiste-Gilles du Coëtlosquet, ancien évêque] de Limoges, the second of which he hopes will be filled by l'Abbé [Jean-Bernard] Le Blanc.
