The letter is undated however a letter that is a follow-on to this letter (MA 5198.1) is dated September 4, 1918; this letter is likely written in August or early September 1918.

Apologizing for the condition of the lithograph and saying "if the framers cannot smooth it out send it back to me & you shall have another;" adding that he has been "very hard at it, rather suffering from perverse pictures which take the wrong turnings so have felt rather depressed - However I hope to get some good work done before the Autumn;" adding, in a postscript, that he should not pay the Leicester Gallery as this is a "private transaction - The cost is £2.12.6. but do be sure you have a perfect specimen."
