Summary
Asking if he might "enter my poem, the 'Battle of the Marne' for the gold medal of my old friends of the poet's Club!... would you kindly convey to those old friends...that I am with them in spirit? Out here & in France we have had two sons fighting, & three daughters nursing, etc. One of my sons smashed with his legs leading an Australian attack in the Dardanelles - the other is in the front line artillery in France (Canadians);" discussing, at length, his contributions to the founding of the British Institute and its Library; adding "I have no scruple in confessing it now to my old fellow dreamers of the Poets Club. It is a dream come true. If, therefore, you have a man who can spare the time to study the poem closely/deeply, for in it I say new things - not all easy to be understood, at a first reading but none the less momentous & true - take my poem of the Battle of the Marne & if you like read it aloud at one of your meetings; as a message from a comrade in Italy, writing on France.
