Summary
Expressing his happiness at hearing "of your lady's return to convalescence - for I know those anxieties. Then I have to say a word or two about your St. John the Baptist - I liked it, & so shall be frank to criticise it. I don't think that you will ever be at your best on that [illegible] subject, but may be mistaken. It is a great advance in skill in Carthage & I liked it far better than the easter Poem, but with hardly a fault - it lacks fire. Now fire & spirit is at your command I know : so why is it? It must be because the subject did not awaken more than your thought. Lastly, though the metre is I think unsuitable to an uncontemplative subject you have managed it masterfully & easily - With the little poem I got this morning, I was indeed delighted. It is perfect. It is I think true & delicate humour and with a most musical & fit rhythm combines the warm beauty of a [illegible] picture."
