Summary
Expressing delight at receiving his letter and disappointment that "you will probably not be coming up to us this term. That Le Fanu you met at Cambridge was Victor, a great friend of mine, a queer original fellow shy and thoroughly good hearted;" commenting on his cousin's publishing firm and saying he knows little about the business "but they certainly publish a great deal of poetry, whether at their own risk or not I don't know. Anyhow, try them. And I heartily wish you all possible success in the venture;" congratulating him on his "friendship with Gosse & Browning and hope they will prove valuable friends to you in the letter-world. (I'll read the sonnet you notice in Firdausi.);" commenting on reading the "Dead Prophet;" adding that "Savonarola is nearly finished. It contains my best work as yet I think, but falls, O how far short! I'll send you a copy & shall expect your free criticism."
