Summary
Discussing his life in the country; "It is no good trying to get me to London. I am stuck here till the war is over - and am toiling at my long book, which must be finished by the spring;" saying that an account of him as 'miserable, lonely & desolate was quite inaccurate...I prefer to be quiet, (& no one can be anything else, in the country, in these times!) I see George every Sunday,. which is my great happiness, & he is only 3 miles away, at his school, so I can ride over there whenever I want to. And, as you know, I am quite good at hibernating;" discussing friends who may rent a house next summer, "but I am afraid the unspeakable war will go on too long to make it possible. There are about 20 American officers living in the house, but I scarcely notice their presence as they are out all day & sleep at the top of the house."
