Summary
Thanking him for his letter about the D. Litt; enclosing "the translated citation for your entertainment. It was all very gracious and encouraging - the only thing amiss was that at my age such things demand a special effort, but I got through it easier than I'd expected. As you say, the second 3 books might all be in one volume. I asked Faber's to make the old C[entury]. a paperback when they did the F.H.M. but they refused. The Weald [of Youth] has been out of print for three years. But, apart from the popularity of the F.H.M. I am the kind of writer who is only read by the civilized public - and they are all that matters, or ensures permanent recognition. Do you know a book called Drawn from Memory, by J.A. Shepherd...he illustrated A.A. Milne - it is a sort of Old C[entury] - absolutely delightful, and a wonderful period picture of the late 80s, & early 90s, - with delicious drawings. Sad that N.Z. wilted after tea yesterday - despite brave Dowling - Everyone wants them to do well." .
