Summary
Praising his book of poetry [Piers Prodigal]; commenting on poetry reviews: "Poetry reviewing has gone for a Burton this many a year. Only the over-established (who have stock treatment) and the chi-chi (where the review can be as inscrutable as the work) seem to be regarded. The rest of us are polished off in half-dozens and after long intervals, by ex-undergrads and other early forms of life, where there's space to spare"; encouraging him to take heart: "don't be chilled out of your vision by neglect, contempt, etc. We live in bad times, and mustn't be surprised if our blossoms are trodden down, or seared by frost, o[r] have their heads deliberately switched off by the cruelly destructive. Keep the root alive."
