Summary
Expressing his happiness at Emin's reception by the Duke [of Cumberland]; noting that the Duke "loves the Art military too well and values a man of Spirit too much not to love and encourage [Emin]"; mentioning Frederick the Great; advising him to "be more observant, than is common for young Soldiers of the Grand operations"; telling him, "it is peculiarly necessary for you to aim, and that as soon as possible, not so much at such things as constitute what is called a good officer, but on those which make a good Commander"; also advising him to "perfect [him]self in Geography and fortification"; asking him to write because his friends "are very anxious" about him.
