Telling him that he is "glad the birds came safe at last"; noting that he sent "the Baillies some ptarmigan yesterday"; reporting that he has something wrong with his bowels and has "been put under a list of negations which scarce admitted of any thing to eat or drink positively permitted" but has "felt no benefit"; apologizing for not writing sooner, and explaining that "sitting much at [his] desk is very bad for the cramp."
