Summary
Responding to the last two paragraphs of Gerry's reply to Talleyrand's letter of July 12 (MA 157.99); insisting on the desire of the French Republic for conciliation; asking him to reread his letter of June 18 (MA 157.93) in which the positions of the French Republique are outlined and within which he believes he will not find anything to justify his recurring two questions; acknowledging that violence has been committed against American commerce in the West Indies and assuring him that orders have been given to stop any aggression until an amicable arrangement can be settled between France and the United States and the treaties between them restored.
