Notes
Part of a collection of autograph letters of Dinah Maria Mulock Craik to Frederic Chapman. Items in the collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
Craik has not listed the year of writing. An unknown hand has added "date Augt 1846" at the top of the letter, but this appears to be incorrect. The next letter in the collection (MA 8610.26), which continues the same discussion of foreign copyrights, appears to be dated 1857 and is also written from "Alan Park Paton's, Esq. / Greenock." It is unclear whether that letter is dated 1857 or 1859.
Written from "Allan Park Paton's Esq."

Summary
Responding to issues he has raised regarding their respective copyrights; saying "I do not wish in any way to blame you, or to assert more than my rights : the sum you gave me for my novels was what I was then content to take - & I have no right to complain : - but you must be aware that it was a sum sufficiently small - viz. £600 for 4 successful Novels - the reprints of which must bring in a settled advantage - of which the author does not share. - Therefore it behoves me to get any advantage I can out of foreign copy rights or in any other way that offers no injustice to you. Will you understand that I do not wish to fight : that our old relations were too kindly for me to desire to counteract them now : but that I wish it made out clear what are your rights & what mine - in these 4 Novels & Alice Learmont."
