Summary:

Explaining that he cannot come to visit Bagot because [Mary] Unwin "has been seized ... with a disorder that for several days deprived her entirely of the use of her right side, and made her speech so indistinct as to be almost unintelligible"; noting that he has "suffer'd nearly the same disability in mind on the occasion as she in body" and now spends his time caring for the "poor patient" instead of working on Homer or [John] Milton; sympathizing with him on the loss of an elderly friend.

Sale (Sotheby's, 28-29 July 1903, lot 460); purchased by Pierpont Morgan from the London dealer J. Pearson & Co., 1904.
