Summary
Writing en route from Malta to Portsmouth, and noting that they will probably arrive at Portsmouth on July 4; telling her that he feels indifferent about England, "but within that apathy I certainly do not comprise yourself"; asking her to prepare rooms for him at Newstead Abbey; telling her that he no longer eats meat or fish or drinks wine; reiterating that he will not sell Newstead Abbey; asking her to receive any visitors because he is "determined to have nobody breaking in upon [his] retirement"; reporting that he is bringing her a shawl and "Ottar of Roses"; announcing his intention to "separate the Mill from Mr. Bowman's farm ... & place [William] Fletcher in it"; speaking harshly of "young Mr. Bowman" for refusing to marry the girl he impregated, and suggesting that young Bowman will "people the parish with bastards" if something is not done to "sober" him. The address panel includes a note (dated July 14, 1811) in which Byron explains why this letter was not forwarded from Portsmouth.
