General Sir John Wallace; by descent to Sir William Thomas Francis Agnew Wallace; bequeathed to his brother, Colonel F.J. Wallace; acquired by Robert Borthwick Adam before 1898; purchased by Pierpont Morgan before 1913, possibly from the London dealer Pearson.
Summary
Commenting at length on his last letter; wishing she could see how he writes to others about her "impromptus" [poems]; describing a scientific demonstration during which "the three coldest liquids in the world" were mixed to create "a blaze of liquid fire" and "the most suffocating exhalation"; praising the color yellow [as a joke because she is suffering from jaundice]; mentioning his trip to Ayrshire; telling him she won't write again until "Willie Kerr" returns [to frank her letters]; hoping he has "the promise of a good crop" and will be a successful farmer.
