Discussing whether he should try to purchase a military commission as an ensign; discouraging him from "buying into the army, unless [he] can command at least £250 more than the £400 which is the regulated price"; encouraging his plan to lease a farm; suggesting the option of being a "salt officer," which was recommended to her by [Adam] Smith; reporting that Smith is interested in Burns's future prospects and wishes "to procure [Burns] leizure [sic] to write"; asking him to deliver a letter to Smith "and at same time thank him for the good will he exprest towards you"; mentioning Lord Glencairn [James Cunningham, Earl of Glencairn], Mr. Balfour, Dr. [John] Moore, and Mr. Draper.
