Addressed to "Mr. Peter Hill / Bookseller / Edinr." Address is written over a different address.
Docketed "Robert Burns / Ellisland." Also with the note "Folio 40" and a second note, largely illegible, concerning the contents of the letter.

Apologizing for the delay in his reply; asking if he has seen "any of my few friends"; discussing the money his book society owes to Hill, and making arrangements for paying it; requesting that he send a copy of James Hurdis's "The Village Curate" and thank [John] Armstrong for the copy of his book [Juvenile Poems; with Remarks on Poetry, and a Dissertation on the Best Method of Punishing and Preventing Crimes]; asking after [William] Smellie.
