Complaining about Congress: "there are so many Gentlemen in Congress who are pleased with the sound of their own sweet voices that two thirds of a session are consumed in making fine speeches instead of doing the business for which they were sent here"; commenting on the poor health of a servant named Hannah, and wondering if she will be well enough to do her work or whether she will need to "engage some other person"; asking whether Frederic's wardrobe and boots are holding out; mentioning that they "feel very sensibly the kindness with which [Frederic is] treated by Mrs. Bogart's family; mentioning John [Alsop King]'s decision to lease his house for five years "to try a country life."
