Description
1 item (1 scroll) : parchment ; 166 x 17 cm
Notes
None of the original versions (i.e. those sent out to the counties of England under the King's seal in 1278) of the Statute of Gloucester is known to survive.
Three sheets sewn together, tapered to a point at the top and possibly lacking at the end.
With an English inscription inverted in upper margin: "Statutes relating to Gloucester, 6 Ed. I" [i.e. in the 6th year of the reign of Edward I].
Written in brown ink by a single scribe; the hand suggests that this copy was made not long after the original Statute of 1278.
Provenance
Daniel and Cynthia Buttafuoco.
Summary
A copy of the Statute of Gloucester that was probably made from the original document delivered to the sheriff of Sussex. This Statute, proclaimed at Gloucester in August 1278, played a key role in Edward I's campaign to recover his rights against the English barons and was crucial to the development of English law.
