Discussing his disillusionment with the political scene and his wish to be with his family instead of in Philadelphia; saying that he is looking forward to seeing her in the spring, but "the time of our leaving this is not yet talked of"; expressing concern over the state of Mr. Randolph's health, and encouraging her to move the family to Monticello; mentioning that he wrote to Mr. Randolph "on the subject of a rider for our Fredericksburg post."
