Expressing his happiness at receiving her letter as "for four days past I had gone through inexpressible anxiety;" hoping that her next letter will "strengthen our hopes of Maria's continuing to recover;" telling her to use whatever she needs to at Monticello as "you cannot do me greater pleasure than by using every thing with the same freedom I should do myself;" asking to "hear of her [Maria] by every post."
