Reporting that he saw her friends Mrs. Trist and Miss Rittenhouse in Philadelphia; describing his difficulties in obtaining a "tolerable house" in New York City; complaining that he "feel[s] heavily the separation from" Martha and "dear Poll"; emphasizing that since she is married, "the happiness of [her] life depends now on the continuing to please a single person. To this all other objects must be secondary."
