Notes
The portrait photograph was taken in New York, probably on December 22, 1903.
A rare and fine portrait photograph of William Butler Yeats by American photographer Alice Boughton. When W. B. Yeats arrived in New York to embark on his first American lecture tour, organized by his friend, the lawyer and art collector John Quinn, he needed new portrait photographs for press and publicity. Quinn arranged for a session in the studio of Alice Boughton, probably on December 22, 1903. Quinn told Boughton that Yeats was "charmed" by the photographs, one of which was published in Florence Brooks's article in the New York Herald on January 17, 1904. Another image was published in the Gaelic American on March 5, 1904. This print is probably from the personal collection of John Quinn.
