Stevenson ... lest I might be taken off suddenly & it might fall into improper hands"; telling Lewis, "you may assure our mutal friend confidentially that he will be offered one of the departments, and that he may lay aside all fears of Col. Polk being managed by Wilkes; noting that he "rejoice[s] & congratulate[s his] country on the Joint Resolutions annexing Texas [having] passed the House of R[epresentatives]."
